Okay, I agree. The title of this post is a terrible pun. But what can you do but laugh at the ignorance exhibited by Texas Republican official Betty Brown? The problem isn’t her confusion over the transliteration of Chinese names. The problem is that she refers to Chinese Americans as “your citizens” when speaking to Ramey Ko from the Organization of Chinese Americans who is generously trying to educate her. This attitude is “you people” by another name and gives you a sense of the unconscious (or conscious) levels of racism harbored by “nice” white people who are just trying to understand the rest of us.
Okay Betty, let’s start with the fact that you don’t understand that Chinese Americans are “our” citizens. That means they are YOUR fellow Americans and entitled to vote under their own names no matter how the hell they want to spell them.
