1 + 1 = 3

“One plus one is three. The one. The other. The space between. In that space is everything!”
~Marley Porter

.

Marley Porter is America’s Vanguard Architect. His accolades volume several shelves. And yet the key to his world renown is sprinkled by 17 words.

Marley designs from the perspective of “the space between.”

“I owe you an apology.”

My face puzzled. Yvonne was gorgeous, 6’3” and she was speaking to me, for the first time.  I spoke up, “Oh?”

“You’re nothing like I thought.”

Oh, crap! So now she thinks I’m a dufus?! This is not good! Not good!
Sensing my dilemma, my right brain flashes Chapter 12, verse 43, “Remain cool, at all times, no matter what.”

“What did you think I was like?”

She almost blushed. Her smile had buckled many a man’s knees.

They did not have Chapter 8, verse 37 at their disposal.

I pursued, “Ahh, Baby Girl…don’t leave my curiosity hanging.”

A small laugh tickled the air. “Curiosity killed the cat.” Her voice was like smokey velvet.

Like the cat of Chapter 4, verse 4 I replied, “But satisfaction brought him back.”

She laughed. A real laugh.

Still laughing she said, “See? That’s what I’m talking about…a bourgeoisie brother would not have had that comeback, not like that!”

(You’ll have to see Paul Harvey for the rest of the story…)

Yvonne did what everyone does: She profiled.

Profiling compares the unknown against that known to make ‘something’ of the unknown.

Often times that which is unknown is synched with the wrong known. Or, an incorrect known. Or, a known not knowingly formed by its owner.

The one. That which Yvonne knew.

The other. Poor profiled, victimized me.

The space between. All the complexities of what Yvonne thought, at first, versus what she later learned then confirmed. (Ooooooo-weeeeeeeeee!)

The space between. Complexities in a singularity. A composition of gradations of beauty.

Sounds like a Quilt to me.

Sounds like a perfect metaphor for the space between.

Sounds like a quilt to me too. “Quilt” seems to be the theme of the week for me. It has a little bit of everything from everyone, is made with loving hands, gives warm comfort whenever most needed and stays with you to the end.

Thanks for sharing such a lovely story. Monica
