A few days ago, Inside from the Inside writer Tom Worth posted a CNN story about the newly elected mayor on Philadelphia entitled “Mississippi Burning” Town Elects Black Mayor. Here is a video of that not-to-be-missed story.
This story reminded me that when officials are elected by a simple majority, not everyone in town (or country) has to have had a change of heart. Just a majority of people have to hold a common viewpoint. This means that people of good will can rally, do the right thing and get on with it, even in the face of a minority of people who don’t agree—and may never. It means we can progress even when there are still racists in this world. It means that the majority choose the values they want to see embodied by a leader and that ultimately we can leave the past behind.
Mayor James Young, and others of good will who press the flesh of every human that will accept their generosity, will not only win the majority of voters, they utterly transform the future.
