Hispanics are center stage this week in the national theater with Justice Sonia Sotomayor being nominated for The Supreme Court.  Let the debate begin!  Will it be payback for the burning down in flames of Justice Robert Bork’s confirmation hearing?  Will it be as controversial and contentious as Justice Clarence Thomas?

Judging from the current noise three things are surfacing: 1. Judge’s Sotomayor’s opinion to set policy 2. Her ethnicity and gender point of reference for her decisions and 3. Her unknown views on privacy and other issues related to abortion.

It will be interesting to see how this fight unfolds in coming days.  Hispanics for the most part are elated by President Obama’s choice.  Justice Sotomayor’s intellectual horsepower is not in question as much as that of former President Bush both graduates of the same Ivy League University.  Is that an important part of the equation?  In the words of one of my teachers,

“We should be ready to revise any belief, we should change a belief where there is compelling reason to change it, and we should not change a belief wantonly without some good reason.  The first point needs intellectual courage, the second, intellectual honesty, and the third, wise restraint.  Do not believe anything but question only what is worth questioning.”  …..John Grinder
