no_swimming1It’s interesting how many white friends have responded to this blog on race with questions like, “Isn’t this all just a little PC and hypersensitive? Aren’t we beyond this?”

It’s tempting to believe that.  And then you see stories like this one, about a group of black kids from an inner-city daycare who had their contract cancelled for a weekly visit to an all-white suburban country club.  They followed the rules and paid their bills, so why was the contract pulled?

The kids “fundamentally changed the atmosphere” at the pool, says the club president.

Members apparently pulled their kids from the pool when the daycare children showed up.  The club appears to have been responding to complaints from its members.

My first reaction to this story was, “Does this stuff really still happen?” Then I thought about it some more. Imagined a busload of black kids showing up at our pool in suburban Colorado. Pictured the faces of the moms I see there on Saturdays. Saw kids scrambling out of the pool faster than if someone had spotted a floating turd.

Of course this stuff still happens. Does it honestly surprise you?
