ask-a-mex-cartoonGustavo Arellano is not your typical Mexican on the street.  You might not recognize his name or face but you may have read his nationally syndicated column, “Ask a Mexican.”  Mr. Arellano is out to educate whites about Hispanics, break the myths and stereotypes associated with Mexican people, and make some bucks doing it.

His column is found mostly in alternative newspapers since it’s over the top for mainstream with its content.  His writing style could be likened to  Dave Chappelle on steroids.  It is witty, funny and very in your face with some depth of serious journalism.

In the three short years he started his column he has made a name for  himself appearing in Comedy Central,  a regular guest on talk radio, “The Today” show, ABC’s “Nightline” and “The Colbert Report.”  He is also a contributing OP Ed writer for The Los Angeles Times.

His inspiration for his style of writing was born from one of his editors seeing a billboard of a Mexican radio talk show host dressed as a Viking.  When Gustavo was asked who this radio personality was, he recognized opportunity knokcing and the rest is history.  Gustavo had his own shtick to be a trailblazer.

His writing has earned him some book deals his most recent is the same as his column, “Ask a Mexican.”  He is on a book signing tour so he could be coming to your home town.

Next week you will read a more in depth interview with Gustavo so stay tuned.
