The problem is that there is nothing real, tangible, flesh and blood, or for that matter, ink on paper, to fight against.
A battle against an attitude, or a state of mind, or a personally held belief, would not seem to be a winnable battle, any more than would be a battle against an army of spirits. You know they’re there; EVERYONE knows they’re there. Their presence is experienced by some more than others. There’s nothing you can do to vanquish them, because there’s nothing physically present to get rid of. You just engage with the enemy when it presents itself, hopefully prevail over it once it realizes that you’re not really what it’s after, and only know that you have won when you reach the point where you can no longer sense its immediate presence.
But then you see a story, either on tv or on your monitor or in your daily walk, and you know it’s back, waging war against some other individual or group. There’s nothing you can do to help that person or group: it’s their fight, not yours.
Or is there? You can stand guard, ready at a moment’s notice to join the fray, to stand with the assailed in hopes of sending the ghosts on to some other target, knowing that this one is too strong to take on.
I’m not talking about laws, or taking things from one group and giving them to another, or forcing people to make choices that harm them or their businesses. It’s a simple matter of doing what’s right, and just as importantly, calling people out when they don’t. Especially if you have some sway with them.
We all know it when we see it, but almost none of us do anything about it other than reading or watching it and entertaining the notion that “gosh, that’s not fair. Sucks to be them.” Then we sit and wait for it to run its natural course, a course of several seconds or sometimes as long as days or weeks. Wait, and do nothing. That’s not enough.
